Synopsis

Our research team has created an AI chatbot (Dolores) that recognises and begins conversations about drawings to elicit more detailed communication about pain and the pain experience. This study aims to establish if conversing with an AI chatbot about pain drawings can improve communication about pain. 50 participants with chronic pain will be recruited at the wait rooms of local pain centres. Participants will first be asked to verbally describe their pain. They will then be asked to draw their pain using either a drawing widget within the Dolores app or with pen and paper. The AI chatbot will then converse with the participant about the drawing. Following this experience, the participant will be asked to verbally describe their pain again.
